Citi was the first foreign established in Algeria

Our presence in Algeria is a clear demonstration of the Algerian government's determination to attract foreign investment and to direct the national economy increasingly towards foreign markets. We have had a significant involvement in Algeria for many years in areas such as correspondent banking, trade finance and corporate finance. As a reflection of the importance of this relationship, a representative office was established in Algiers in 1991, and in 1997 we were the first foreign institution to apply for and obtain a commercial banking license. Our full-fledged branch opened for business in 1998.

The WGEA Gender Pay Gap reporting is an important tool for driving transparency and accountability across the Australian private sector and we are pleased to publish our data on an annual basis.It is important to note that the gender pay gap reflects the unadjusted median pay of women and men at Citi regardless of job function, grade, performance, tenure, and other factors. It is not a measure of the difference in pay between women and men doing the same job.We are encouraged to see that Citi Australia’s gender pay gap has improved year on year, across all categories of measurement for our internal results. When looking at median total remuneration, Citi’s gap is 25.6% for the 2023-2024 reporting period. This demonstrates we still have more work to do.We are committed to a practical approach to driving change. Citi began operating in the Bahamas in 1960 as First National City Bank of New York and First National City Trust Company (Bahamas) Limited. •	Activities included offshore Euro Dollar deposits, limited local retail banking and the Trust business (Fiduciary services)

In 1972, Citi moved into a Citi owned building in Oakes Field. A branch was maintained downtown.

In 1976, the entities changed their names to Citibank N.A. and Cititrust (Bahamas) Limited respectively.

In 1987, Citibank implemented a full service consumer bank business.

In 1994, Citi established a local presence in Latin American Investment Bank Bahamas Limited to support offshore activity booked in Bahamas entities.

In 2001, Citibank closed its consumer bank business and the same year opened a niche corporate bank business supported from the Trinidad hub.

In 2010, Citibank opened a mini branch at Thompson Boulevard to service the cash needs of its domestic clients.

Privacy Statement

The Bank Act requires banks to inform customers and the public in plain language that certain conduct by its employees is illegal. To comply with the law, Citibank Canada and its wholly-owned subsidiaries and Citibank, N.A., hereafter referred to as "Citibank", have created this web page explaining the conduct that is prohibited and how to contact us if you have any questions, complaints or concerns.

What Conduct is Prohibited? The Bank Act prohibits the bank engaging in certain conduct. It is against the law to:
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">impose undue pressure on a person, or coercing a person, for any purpose;</li>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">engage in coercive tied selling; or</li>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">take advantage of a person.</li>
</ul>
 What is Coercive Tied Selling? The Bank Act prohibits a bank from practicing coercive tied selling which involves a bank imposing undue pressure on or coercing a person to obtain a product or service from a particular person, including the bank and any of its affiliates, as a condition for obtaining another product or service from the bank. You cannot be unduly pressured to buy a product or service that you don't want, from a bank or one of its affiliates, to obtain another bank product or service.
Examples of Prohibited Conduct The following examples will help to explain prohibited conduct and what is not allowed.
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">A banking representative suggests you open a new credit card. You refuse and provide a reason for not needing or wanting it. The banking representative continues to insist that you get the credit card and tells you it would help meet their sales target. You relent and agree to the credit card.</li>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">Your bank's mortgage specialist tells you that you qualify for a home mortgage. However, you are also told that the bank will approve your mortgage only if you transfer your investments to the bank or its affiliates. You want the mortgage, but you do not want to move your investments.</li>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">Your bank's credit officer tells you that you qualify for a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) loan. However, you are also told that the bank will approve the loan only if you use the money to buy the bank's mutual funds. You want the loan, but you want to invest the money somewhere else.</li>
</ul>
All of the above practices are against the law since a bank cannot pressure, coerce or take advantage of you. If you qualify for a product, a banking representative is not allowed to excessively pressure you to buy another unwanted product or service as a condition of obtaining the product you want.
What is NOT Prohibited Conduct? Most businesses, including Citibank, look for tangible ways to show their interest in your business and appreciation for your loyalty. Sales practices, such as preferential pricing and bundling of products and services, offer potential and existing customers better prices or more favourable terms. These practices should not be confused with prohibited conduct under the Bank Act. Many of these practices will be familiar to you in your dealings with other businesses.
What is Preferential Pricing? Preferential pricing means offering customers a better price or rate on all or part of their business. For example, a shoe store offers a second pair of shoes at half price.
Similarly, a bank may be able to offer you preferential pricing - a higher interest rate on investments or a lower interest rate on loans - if you use more of its products or services. The following two examples will help to explain preferential pricing in banks.
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">After approving your application for a home mortgage from the bank, your bank's mortgage specialist tells you that this mortgage would be available at a lower interest rate if you transferred your investments to the bank or its affiliates.</li>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">After approving your application for an RRSP loan, your bank's credit officer offers you a lower interest rate if you use the loan to buy the bank's mutual funds.</li>
</ul>
The above practices are acceptable. The approval of your mortgage and RRSP loan is not conditional on your taking another bank product or service. Rather you are offered preferential pricing to encourage you to give the bank more business.
What is Bundling of Products and Services? Products or services are often combined to give consumers better prices, incentives or more favourable terms. By linking or bundling their products or services, businesses are often able to offer them to you at a lower combined price than if you bought each product on its own. For example, a fast-food chain advertises a meal combination that includes a hamburger, fries and a drink. The overall price is lower than if you bought the three items separately.
Similarly, banks may offer you bundled financial services or products so that you can take advantage of package prices that are less than the sum of the individual items.
The following example will help to explain the bundling of bank products and services.
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">You plan to open a bank account that charges you for individual transactions. The banking representative offers you a package of services that includes a comparable bank account, a safety deposit box and a credit card with no annual fee. The total price for the package is less than if you purchased each part of the package separately.</li>
</ul>
Bundling products in this way is permitted because you have the choice of buying the items individually or in a package.
How do we Manage our Credit Risk? To ensure the safety of their depositors, creditors and shareholders, banks must carefully manage the risk on the loans and credit cards they approve. Therefore the law allows us to impose certain requirements on borrowers as a condition for granting a loan - but only to the extent necessary for us to manage our risk.
The following example will help to explain how banks manage such risk.
<ul>
<li style="font-family: Citi-Sans-Text-Regular;">You apply for an operating loan for your business. To manage the risk associated with the loan, your bank requires your business to have an operating account with the bank as a condition for obtaining the loan.</li>
</ul>
The above example is legal and appropriate. Having your business' operating account at the bank allows your bank to assess possible risks associated with your business' cash flow and manage the risk associated with the loan.
At Citibank, our requirements for borrowers will be reasonable and consistent with our level of risk.

Citi Service Center in Chile provides technology support to Citigroup across Latin America and North America. 

Citi has been present in Chile since 1916, when it opened as The National City Bank of New York in Valparaiso. Since its opening, the franchise has been an active participant in Chile's economic development and has funded countless private and public projects.
In 2002, Citibank opened a Citi Service Center that provides technology services and support to Citigroup across Latin America and North America. It employs more than 430 people.

The International Banking Corporation (IBC) opened a branch in Shanghai. The bank was known as the Hua Qi or “Flower Flag” Bank locally because the stars on the American flag that flew atop the branch looked like representations of flowers to the local community.

The Bank was one of the major foreign banks in China.

Established an office in the Shenzhen special economic zone of China.

Became the only U.S. bank with a branch in Shanghai.

Citi was the first international bank to move its China headquarters to the mainland from Hong Kong.

Received approval from People’s Bank of China to provide custodial services for Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors (QFII) in China.

Citigroup Tower in Shanghai became the headquarters for China franchise and opened a China Consumer Flagship Branch in the tower.

Citi launched its first annual Global Community Day. Over 30,000 Citi China volunteers have participated in over 300 volunteering activities, contributing about 100,000 hours to the communities we live and work in, during the past 16 Global Community Day.

Granted approval by the China Banking Regulatory Commission to commence operations as a locally incorporated bank, one of the first foreign banks to do so.

Received regulatory approval to act as an Interbank Bond Market Maker.

Became one of the first two global banks approved to establish a presence in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone in China. 

Awarded Futures Margin Depository Bank license by China Financial Futures Exchange, enabled Citi to provide futures margin deposit service to our QFII and RQFII clients with a complete market access solution for China.

Became the sole foreign bank in Shanghai and the Greater Bay Area to obtain approvals from SAFE (State Administration of Foreign Exchange) to carry on the Trade Facilitation Pilot Scheme.

Became the first American bank to secure a domestic fund custody license from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), and was first bank among the top 5 global custodians to do so. 

Received approval from Shanghai Futures Exchange and International Energy Exchange to become the first US bank with the license to act as a Futures Margin Depository Bank.

Became the first foreign bank to implement the Forex Simplification Program by China State Administration of Foreign Exchange.
